Dear Parents, Governors and Colleagues

Welcome back to everyone. We’ve had such a fantastic first few days in school – the children have settled really well and it is lovely to welcome both old and new faces. Our new Year 3 children already feel like old hands and I’ve been delighted with how welcoming the children have been to our many new starters in the older year groups. Well done, everyone – a great start to the new academic year.

School uniform
The children look really smart in their school uniforms – thank you. Just a reminder, please, that jumpers, sweatshirts or cardigans must be either jade (or ‘supermarket bottle green’!) or grey, - absolutely not black, and no logos/trim please apart from a school logo. Trousers or skirts can be either black or grey, shirts or polo-shirts can be jade or white, and shoes must be plain black (or white/brown sandals). Please make sure also that children have a PE kit in school – plain dark shorts and/or jogging bottoms, and either trainers or plimsolls please, as well as a t-shirt in their House colour. If your son or daughter is new to the school and has not yet been given a House t-shirt, please let the class teacher know. Replacement t-shirts can be bought from the school office for £2.50.

Finally, please remember one pair of plain stud ear-rings only, no other jewellery, no make-up, no exciting hairstyles, no coloured nail-polish, no visible tattoo transfers, names on everything… and I think that’s it! Thank you, everyone.

Getting to school on time… every day
We’ve had very good attendance and punctuality so far this term, and I’m pleased that our attendance figure was nearly 96% last year – a significant improvement on previous years. Just a reminder please that children should be in school at 8:30, ready for registration at 8:45, and that children not in their classrooms by 8:45 are marked as Late. If they are still not in by 9:10, they are marked as a U.
You will be aware that Hampshire has a new attendance policy which reflects Government expectations, and I am required to enforce this policy. I have very little leeway now and it is highly unlikely that any non-medical, non-essential absence or lateness will be authorised. I am attaching the Code of Conduct letter from Hampshire County Council but, for ease of reference, here are the key points of law:

From September 2015 all schools will be required to work with Hampshire County Council to take legal action if:
1.       A child has unauthorised absence for 10 or more sessions (5 school days).
2.       A child is continually late to school and this lateness is unauthorised for 10 or more sessions.
3.       A child has any unauthorised absence during any formal examinations, assessment or testing.

Please remember also that children may receive a Lost Minutes or a Lost Lunch sanction if they are persistently late to school.

At the end of the school day, the bell rings at 3:15 and we aim for the children and teachers to be on the playground by 3:20. If the children haven’t been collected by the time the teacher leaves the playground, they will be waiting for you in the entrance foyer.

Homework
The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 were given Home School Agreements to discuss with parents last Thursday. These need to be returned please by Tuesday. From this week, all the year groups will be set homework on Thursdays, to be returned by the following Tuesday, and we have a homework club on Monday after school to help parents with this – please ask for details from the school office. As well as being handed out and explained in class, the teachers also upload it to the school website – we aim to do this by the Thursday evening.

We expect all our children to complete their homework well and to hand it in on time, and also to read and practise their spellings and tables regularly throughout the week. If children do not comply with our school expectations, then I am afraid that they may receive a Lost Lunch sanction. If your son or daughter is struggling with their homework, do please discuss it with the class teacher, or encourage them to ask their teacher or LSA for help.

Celebration Assembly
We will be restarting our Friday morning Celebration Assembly this Friday – parents, grannies and granddads, toddlers, babies in buggies etc very welcome! If your son or daughter is nominated for a Merit, a Values or a STEP award, they will be given an invitation on the Tuesday, and I give children who have been nominated for a Headteacher certificate a sticker and an invitation card when they come to see me in my office. If you can’t make that assembly, it’s no problem – just let us know and we can present the award the following Friday.

From now on those children who manage to maintain their high standards will be treated to a choice of entertaining activities at the end of each half term. These activities will be led by teachers with a special skill and interest and will be available to children of all ages across the school.

Every week, in recognition of their effort and commitment to school, all the children will be able to revise their choices on a new reward board, boldly displayed on all classroom walls. Let’s hope as many children as possible succeed in earning their treat. Go for it, everyone!

‘Meet the School’ Event
Please bear with us as we are trialling a new format this year! The ‘Meet the School’ event will be open to parents of all years and will be held in the school hall on Thursday, 24th September 2015 from 3.30 to 4.30 pm. A series of stalls will enable you to meet with the school community and learn about the year ahead - your child’s teacher, Hart Plain Infant School and Cowplain Community School, the PTA and Governors. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available, as well as a book fayre. Please do come along and meet us.

Home School Link Worker
Here are a few words from our Home School Link Worker.

“Hello, my name is Sarah Atkins. I am the Home School Link Worker at Hart Plain Junior School. Let me tell you a little about my role”.

What does a Home School Link Worker do?

·      Act as a link between home and school, including making home visits;
·      Offer a range of services to children and families requiring support and information;
·      Help children and families to increase school attendance and minimise absences;
·      Talk with and support children in school and encourage them, through direct contact, to be positive about
        their future;
·      Support parents to develop and maintain a positive relationship with the school.

What concerns do I deal with?

I am here to support children and families with a wide range of issues and concerns:

·      Attendance
·      Relationships
·      Home circumstances
·      Home-School relationships

We know children achieve more when both home and school are working in partnership to support a child’s development. My aim is to encourage and maintain a strong, positive partnership between home and school.

I’m not saying I have all the answers, but sometimes talking over a worry can make all the difference!

If you have any concerns please call into the school and see me or contact me by telephoning 02392 263200 or my email address is: s.atkins@hartplain-jun.hants.sch.uk.

Craft Donations
If you have any craft items that you no longer use at home, would you please bring them into the school office, as Craft Club will be starting in the Pride Room next Monday, 14th September 2015 from 2.15 – 3.15 pm. All your donations will be gratefully received and we hope to see you at Craft Club.

Special Needs Information Day 2015
Support4SEND (formerly Hampshire Parent Partnership Service) and Parent Voice are pleased to announce their next Special Needs Information Day will be held on Saturday, 17th October 2015 from 10 am to 3 pm at Horndean Technology College, Barton Cross, Horndean, PO8 9PQ.

There will be a wide variety of exhibitors at the College, to offer information and advice on a range of issues relating to special needs. There will also be a series of workshops and information talks on topics relating to behaviour, speech and language difficulties, autism, specific learning difficulties, post 16 options and more.

They are also hoping to offer some entertainment for the children who are accompanying their parents to the event. Further details will be available shortly.

Payment of Dinner Monies Online
Please be patient – we are having some issues with our online payments at the moment. We are in touch with Tucasi and hope the problem will be resolved very soon. Once this problem is rectified, we will be issuing letters to our new Year 3 parents explaining how to set up an online account.

Yours sincerely

Nicola Tettmar
Headteacher
