Transition to Secondary

Transition Activities

We have been working on a selection of transition activities for Year 6-7. Included is a plan with some useful hints and tips for discussion with each activity. The activities cover key skills that you child will need when starting secondary school, such as, 'How to understand a school timetable' and 'Managing situations'. The plan can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.

Please see also the HPJS Transition Year 6-7 Booklet with supporting materials for each activity.

Helping your child to be 'secondary ready'

If your child is continuing their learning at home, here are a few useful websites that you can access to help your child with the transition between KS2 and KS3 learning.

MATHS

'The HIAS maths team have put together an overview of maths units for the summer term which would enable children to engage in some mathematical thinking across all the domains in the mathematics curriculum. The areas of mathematics suggested are those which children would find easiest to access independently while at home. Each unit has some of the national curriculum statements for that domain but does not include all the statements. The overview and the linked documents are intended to support teacher’s in their choices of tasks for home learning over the coming weeks.

For each unit of work we have  provided some examples of a problem for the unit, giving a ‘model’ answer for the task and then similar tasks for further practise with answers. We have have pitched the tasks so that the majority of pupils in that year group would be able to access the task with minimal adult support. It will be important for teachers to adapt tasks for the range of learners they are supporting.  The tasks chosen are aimed at revisiting prior learning rather than attempting to support new learning.'

Alternatively, you could take a loot at a free online course offered by Numerise.

'Secondary Ready is a free course within Numerise that is designed to prepare Year 6 learners for starting Year 7 in September.

Being up-to-speed in maths when starting secondary school is really important. Things like core number skills are really vital to make sure that when they start moving on to more challenging concepts, they have a solid foundation with no gaps in their knowledge.'
